Patient support

For the patient

Your emotional care, alongside the medical care. Start with whichever section matches today — nothing here has to be read in order.

Start here each morning

Emotional check-ins

A daily minute of honest noticing. Naming how you feel is not self-indulgent — it is clinical information about your own recovery.

When your mind won't stop racing

Anxiety and stress management

Illness produces genuine uncertainty, and anxiety is the mind's response to uncertainty. The goal is not zero anxiety — it is anxiety that no longer runs the day.

When nothing feels worth doing

Low mood and depression

Sadness about serious illness is normal. Depression is different — it flattens everything, including the things that used to help — and it is treatable.

Pain and emotional distress journal

Pain is never only physical. A journal that tracks both the sensation and the feeling around it gives your team something far more useful than 'it's been bad'.

Guided relaxation and breathing

Slow breathing is the one lever you can pull on your own nervous system at any moment, in any ward, without equipment or permission.

Hope and resilience

Hope is not optimism about outcomes. It is the ability to keep wanting things, and to keep finding routes to them, when the map has changed.

Self-esteem and identity

Illness changes bodies, roles and independence. Rebuilding self-worth means separating what you can do from who you are.

Sleep when you are unwell

Pain, steroids, worry and hospital noise all break sleep — and broken sleep worsens pain, mood and appetite. Small structural changes work better than trying harder.

Spiritual care (optional)

For many people illness raises questions that are not medical: why this, what now, what is my life for. Engage with this section only if it is meaningful to you.

Positive affirmations that are not hollow

Affirmations only work when you can believe them. The trick is to aim slightly ahead of where you are, not at a fantasy.

Setting goals despite illness

Goals keep a life pointed forward. With illness they need to be smaller, more flexible, and immune to a bad week.

Afya Companion offers education and self-help support. It does not diagnose, treat or replace care from your doctor, nurse, psychologist or dietitian. If something in your health changes, speak to your care team.

Afya CompanionYou are not alone in your care journey. Education and self-help support; not a substitute for professional medical care.
