Caregiver support
Balancing caregiving with the rest of your life
Work, children, your own health and your relationship do not pause because someone is ill. Balance here means deliberate trade-offs, not equal time.
Caregiver
Decide what gets dropped
You cannot run every part of life at full capacity through a serious illness. Choose consciously what runs at 60% for now, rather than letting everything fray at once and feeling like a failure at all of it.
Tell the people affected which setting you have chosen and roughly for how long. Most resentment comes from unexplained absence, not from reduced availability.
Work
- Tell your employer earlier than feels comfortable; protections and flexibility usually need a formal conversation.
- Ask about carer's leave, flexible hours, remote work and phased return — entitlements vary by country and employer, and most people never ask.
- Identify one colleague who can cover you at short notice, and make it reciprocal.
Your relationship and children
- Book time with your partner that has a rule: no illness talk for the first thirty minutes.
- Give children specific, age-appropriate information and a specific job — uncertainty frightens them more than facts.
- Protect one family ritual completely: a Friday meal, bedtime stories, Sunday call.
Where to go next
Afya Companion offers education and self-help support. It does not diagnose, treat or replace care from your doctor, nurse, psychologist or dietitian. If something in your health changes, speak to your care team.
