Caregiver support

Compassion fatigue

The cost of caring: when repeated exposure to someone else's suffering wears down your capacity to feel it without shutting down.

How it differs from burnout

Burnout builds slowly from workload and lack of control. Compassion fatigue can arrive suddenly, and comes specifically from absorbing another person's pain and fear.

It shows up as emotional numbness, intrusive images of the person's worst moments, avoidance of the sickroom, and a sense that you have lost your warmth.

What protects you

  • Boundaries around the caring role: hours, tasks, and one room in the house that is not a hospital.
  • Debriefing — saying the hard parts out loud to someone who is not the patient.
  • Contact with people who need nothing from you.
  • Rituals that mark the end of caring hours: a shower, a walk, changing clothes.
  • Noticing satisfaction where it exists. Compassion satisfaction is the counterweight and it is measurable.

Numbness is not failure

Going flat is a protective reflex, not a character defect. Treat it as a signal to reduce exposure and increase recovery, the same way you would treat a strained muscle.

Where to go next

Afya Companion offers education and self-help support. It does not diagnose, treat or replace care from your doctor, nurse, psychologist or dietitian. If something in your health changes, speak to your care team.

Afya CompanionYou are not alone in your care journey. Education and self-help support; not a substitute for professional medical care.
