Grieving before the loss

Anticipatory grief

Saying goodbye

There is rarely one perfect final moment. Goodbye is usually said many times, in ordinary ways.

People die when their family has gone for coffee. They die suddenly after a stable week. They are unconscious for the last days. If any of this happens, it is not a failure and it is not a message.

Say what needs saying early and often, so nothing depends on being in the room at the exact minute.

In the last days

  • Hearing is thought to persist late — keep speaking, use their name, say who is there.
  • Touch, mouth care and a familiar voice matter more than conversation.
  • Play music they love; keep the room as they would want it.
  • Take breaks. Exhausting yourself does not help them.
  • Give other relatives their own time in the room.

If you were not there

This is one of the most common sources of lasting guilt, and one of the least deserved. Many people appear to wait until the room is empty; nurses see it constantly.

What you did across months counts for more than the final ten minutes. Say your goodbye afterwards — out loud, in a letter, at the graveside. It still arrives.
