Nutrition education
Nutrition and mental health
Diet will not treat depression, but several nutritional factors measurably affect mood, energy and thinking.

Real links
- Low B12, folate, iron and vitamin D produce fatigue and low mood, and are easily missed.
- Blood glucose swings from erratic eating produce irritability and anxiety-like symptoms.
- Dehydration impairs concentration and mood within hours.
- Alcohol worsens sleep, anxiety and depression, whatever it does in the moment.
- Caffeine after midday reduces deep sleep, which lowers mood the next day.
Depression and eating
Depression removes appetite for some people and drives eating in others. Both are symptoms, not failures of discipline.
If cooking has become impossible, drop to the lowest-effort nutrition you can manage — milk, eggs, tinned fish, bread, fortified drinks — and treat the depression separately.
Simple, useful steps
- Eat something with protein within an hour of waking.
- Do not go more than five hours without food during the day.
- Drink water before reaching for a third coffee.
- Ask your doctor to check B12, folate, ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D if fatigue is prominent.
